PEACE ARCH (NEWS1130) – We must never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

That’s the message from paramedic Nahum Ip with BC Ambulance, and hundreds of other firefighters, border guards and veterans from both sides of the border who gathered at Peace Arch Provincial Park to remember their colleagues who died trying to save others on 9/11.

“These are my brothers and sisters, and we are a very small community, emergency services,” Ip says. “When one hurts, everybody hurts.”

Almost 3,000 people died in the terrorist attacks 13 years ago, with 343 firefighters and 72 police officers among the dead after attempting to save others.

“I think it honours them to never forget the sacrifice that was given, and the sacrifice that all the families made,” Scott Young with Coquitlam Fire and Rescue says. “It helps us to focus on what’s important in our lives around us.”

The event included a motorcycle convoy to raise funds for the Honour House Society, which provides temporary accommodation to family members of veterans while they attend hospitals if they’re travelling from out of town for treatment.
