Ways to help keep your kids’ minds sharp during the teachers dispute

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – In a normal school year, by now your kids would have had a few homework assignments, quizzes and probably a test or two. But with the strike, children have been away from their classes a lot longer than usual.

So are you worried your kids won’t be sharp, when they finally do head back to school?

Barbara Kennedy with Sylvan Learning in Vancouver says parents should do their best to keep their children brushing up on their skills, whether it is reading, writing, or math.

She says you should incorporate what your kids like to do, in order to get them practicing. One idea is to have them read a book that has been made into a movie — before checking out the flick.

“Before they read the story, maybe talk about what the child thinks the problem is in the story because that’s always one of the main skills that they learn in school — to identify the problem and the solution in the characters.”

Kennedy reminds parents not to shy away from technology because things like apps can be a great learning tool.

“A good one is called Motion Math Pizza for kids eight and older. That involves you buying the ingredients for the pizza, and you make it — it is like a business. So those are kind of fun games to keep the math skills up.”

Kennedy says no matter what subject your child is working on, you should have them spend about 30 minutes each day practicing.
