Co-owner of Little Sisters bookstore dies suddenly

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A man whose fight to be allowed to import same-sex literature went all the way to the Supreme Court Canada has died suddenly.

Jim Deva was co-owner of the Little Sisters Bookstore on Davie Street.

The court case involved what was considered, back in 2000, obscene material. The store eventually won.

Deva has since been considered a man at the forefront of the fight for same-sex rights in Canada.

Sheryl Williamson with the West End Citizens Action Network says he had a passion for the community.

“You know what? Jim and I worked on a lot of stuff and we may not have always seen eye to eye but I have a deep and enduring respect for everything he did for the West End and the city, and he’ll be missed.”

It’s not clear how he died.
