Rob Ford remains in hospital following cancer treatment

TORONTO (NEWS1130) – Doug Ford hopes to hear from doctors on Monday whether Rob Ford will be discharged from hospital after undergoing his first round of cancer treatment.
Doctors announced last week Ford had been diagnosed with malignant liposarcoma, a type of cancer in fat cells, and that initial treatment would consist of two rounds of chemotherapy before other options, such as radiation or surgery, would be considered.
On Thursday Ford began three days of chemotherapy, which will be followed by an 18 day rest period.
Doctors will have to assess how Ford is reacting to treatment before giving him the green light to leave hospital.
Dr. Akbar Khan with Medicor Cancer Centres said Ford may be experiencing a number of side effects from the treatment.
“The common side effects that you might experience with that is hair loss, which is a very high percentage,” Khan explained. “Nausea and vomiting is very common and problem with blood cell counts.”
The cancer diagnosis prompted Ford to announce that he would not be seeking re-election but instead he is running for a seat on council in Ward 2, Etobicoke North.
“I’m sure it’s going to be a challenge but again you never know, some people do extremely well on chemotherapy,” said Khan. “He may just be able to keep up with his work and have minimal down time.”
At a campaign kick off on Saturday, Doug Ford said that despite his brother’s illness, he remains enthusiastic about the Oct. 27 election.
