Parents should start thinking about flu season now to prevent illness

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – While parents are no doubt excited to finally have their kids back in school, many are probably less thrilled when the kids came home sporting sniffles and coughs.

The province will be bringing in almost 60,000 extra doses of flu-vaccine to be distributed to doctors and clinics, but flu season for kids is already starting.

Fraser Health Medical Health Officer Dr Michelle Murtie says students with sniffles are inevitable this time of year. “It just really does mean that all of a sudden now you have all these kids being in an enclosed space close together sharing things they weren’t sharing over the summertime so germs is one of them.”

She says prevention is the best policy. “Making sure that your kids are washing their hands frequently enough, cleaning surfaces and toys as they are coming home from school, making sure that your kid’s immunizations are up to date so before they go back to school [and] checking over your kids immunization lists.”

Murtie also says flu shots should be available in mid-October which will at least prevent one kind of illness from taking root.
