ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – Advocates for Abbotsford’s homeless will have their day in court.

The group has convinced a BC Supreme Court judge to hear its constitutional challenge banning camping in public parks.

The BC-Yukon Drug War Survivors group is thrilled to have about the decision.

A man who goes by the name Tiny has been working with those living in various tent cities in Abbotsford.

He says he’s glad the BC Supreme Court will have a serious look at the bylaws in question. “Today is a good day. Now we have our chance to have our day in court. With PIVOT backing us up, they’ve gone to bat for us, to give these guys a voice.”

“The City of Abbotsford’s legal counsel is currently reviewing the Honourable Chief Justice Hinkson’s detailed Reasons for Judgment. The City will be considering next steps and options once Abbotsford City Council receives a briefing on today’s decision,” says Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman in an emailed statement.

The city and its homeless have been going back and forth on the issue since 2013.
