Surrey to Vancouver bike path improvements begin this week

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – The path linking Surrey to Vancouver used by cyclists and pedestrians will soon see improvements. Construction on the 26 kilometre path known as the BC Parkway which runs along most of the region’s SkyTrain line will begin this week. The upgrades include better lighting in some sections as well as the widening, realigning and repaving of parts in Vancouver.

Andrew Feltham with HUB Cycling New Westminster welcomes the improvements but says the changes aren’t good enough.
He’s really worried about a stretch in New West which he feels is unsafe because of heavy car and truck traffic.
“For many people anecdotally they just don’t want to ride their bikes there. It’s just too dangerous…We’ve been asking for this one stretch to be improved for a long time and it seems to be dragging and dragging.”

“The BC Parkway is a very valuable network, part of our bike network in the region, but if you have a weak link like a very dangerous section along Stewardson Way, it really degrades the entire system.”

Minor detours will be in place during construction. The project is expected to be completed by next spring.
The funding support comes from the city of Vancouver, city of Surrey and TransLink.
