BC’s top court rejects appeal for man who killed his girlfriend

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The man convicted of shooting his 18-year-old girlfriend in 1999 and dumping her body in a Vancouver alley before escaping to the United States has lost his appeal for a new trial.

Ninderjit Singh pleaded guilty in March 2013 to the second-degree murder of Poonam Randhawa and was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 16 years.

He appealed, asking BC. highest court to withdraw his guilty plea and order a new trial for second-degree murder.

Singh asked to introduce new evidence and argued his guilty plea was invalid because it was involuntary and uninformed, and the judge didn’t adequately question his decision.

In dismissing the claim, the BC Court of Appeal ruled the trial judge ensured Singh understood the plea, that it was entering it voluntarily and the Crown’s evidence in the case was overwhelming.

Singh was arrested in August 2011, while driving away from his home in Riverside County, Calif., where he had a family, acquired a new identity with forged documents, grew a beard and long hair and gained 65 pounds.
