Fire destroys Dragon Boat Festival equipment

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There has been another massive fire in Vancouver, the second one since Friday.

This time, a big shipping container that holds equipment and many of the boats used for the annual Dragon Boat Festival in False Creek has been gutted.

Race Director Greg Lamb says the rebuilding process is going to take a while. “Losing those boats hurts because you know, I can get a life-jackets next week but these boats might take months for us to get a supplier and get new ones.”

Lamb says this will likely cost them tens of thousands of dollars.

“It’s going to be quite a bit of money because the trailer was donated to us from Concord Pacific over ten years ago.”

Lamb adds the facility has been broken into before, but he doesn’t think this morning’s fire was targeted.

The cause is still under investigation and investigators are expected to be on scene for a few more hours.
