Should Surrey adopt a ward system?

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – A month ahead of civic elections, we’re looking at whether diverse cities like Surrey should switch to the ward system.

The system divides large and medium cities into neighbourhoods represented by local councillors.

Frank Bucholtz, editor of the Langley times and writer for the Surrey Now and Peace Arch News believes it’s long overdue in Surrey.

“People who live in South Surrey have very little in common with people who live in Surrey City Centre, or as it used to be known, Whalley. I think it’s just a better way for people to have contact with their local government.”

He thinks the ward system would also work well in Vancouver, Burnaby and possibly Richmond and Coquitlam. “I think the larger communities, I think it makes some sense. I don’t think it makes sense in a small community like New Westminster or Delta.”

Voters head to the polls November 15th.

News1130 will have full coverage on-air and online.
