New training standards for BC firefighters

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Firefighters in BC are using a new training playbook that establishes minimum standards for crews across the province.

Fire Commissioner Gord Anderson says it allows firefighters in a community to train specifically for the services they provide, rather than be trained in a more general fashion.

“The community determines which level of service of the three categories that are laid out. They determine which category their community falls within in terms of the level of service and the playbook determines what training is required for them to able to deliver that service.”

Anderson notes firefighters will only train for services their community fire hall provides. “They have certain services they are providing currently within their community or they can choose to provide within their community and now what they have is something that very clearly lays out for that level of service certain requirements from a training perspective what must be met and those compancies are what the firefighters train too.”

He adds by not requiring broad spectrum training for all fire fighters, the new regulations will save money for smaller communities who don’t provide as many services.
