Hard to say how many people in BC have Enterovirus: chief medical health officer

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It is difficult to say exactly how many people in BC have Enterovirus because the severity of symptoms is wide-ranging.

BC’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall, says some people may have the respiratory illness and not know it. “I think we were running on Friday as of having identified I think it was 35 cases but it might have been more and then we had one death in a young man,” he explains. “You have to understand that not everybody with Enterovirus is going to actually have a lab test done. Lab tests tend to focus on people with the more severe end of the spectrum.”

Kendall says people may be more susceptible to this type of respiratory virus because it hasn’t circulated in North America for a very long time.
