VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Many people use them to get in and out of Vancouver but what is the long-term plan for the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts?
Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says he needs more information before moving forward. “We want to ensure that the contaminant soils are addressed, the transportation issues continue to be resolved and all of the related costs and financing are clear before there is a final decision on the future of the viaducts.”
“There is still work to be done but we expect it to come back to council in 2015,” he adds.
The viaducts are remnants of the 1960’s freeway system which was abandoned after a lack of public support. Some say they now cut off neighbourhoods from False Creek and they want the spans removed for park land below. Others argue they are needed for smooth flow of traffic in and out of downtown.
