Doctor shoots down report claiming PSA tests aren’t effective

CALGARY (NEWS1130) – A urologist in Calgary is slamming a report that claims a common type of prostate cancer screening does more harm than good.

Earlier this week, the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health claimed the PSA test isn’t effective because it often produces false positives.

“There are other, better studies out there that do show a decrease in mortality from prostate cancer due to screening and why they chose to ignore those is anybody’s guess,” says Dr. John Dushinski with the Prostate Cancer Centre in Calgary.

Dushinski tells us the group doesn’t deal directly with cancer and he doesn’t think it should have released this report.

“This is a group that has been against PSA testing, so went out and found a study that they thought they could use to debunk it,” he argues.

He encourages all men over the age of 50 to look into screening.
