Kasting admits he won’t win Vancouver mayoral race, backs NPA’s LaPointe

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As the civic election gets closer, some candidates in Vancouver are giving up on their own campaigns to back the competition.

Both the NPA and Vision Vancouver are getting support from unlikely places.

Bob Kasting had been running as an independent for mayor, but his campaign just hasn’t been getting any traction, so he’s backing the NPA’s Kirk LaPointe.

He says he’s been unable to fight against what he calls a “public relations machine” working to convince the public the Vision party is pro-environment.

“I don’t buy that and a lot of people don’t buy that. I was hoping to be able to [rally the] people that though in a similar fashion, but I’ve realized that I can’t do that,” says Kasting.

Kasting says he’s hoping to see a city council with members from all parties, helmed by the leader of the NPA. “It is my view, and I think it might be shared by others, that the person who can lead a mixed council better than anyone — or, certainly, better than the current mayor — is going to be Kirk Lapointe.”

At the same time, the former president of the NPA is putting his support behind Gregor Robertson and Vision. Michael Davis says the NPA has moved too far to the right.
