Commemorative poppy demand hits record high

By

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – Demand for commemorative poppies has hit a record high this year.

The Royal Canadian Legion says 19 million of the red and black pins have been distributed in the annual campaign leading up to Remembrance Day.

That’s a million more than last year.

Legion spokesman Bill Maxwell says he believes the recent deaths of two soldiers — one in Ottawa, the other near Montreal — have spurred demand.

He says the anniversaries of the First and Second World Wars have also kept veterans and their sacrifices in Canadians’ minds.

Maxwell hopes the Legion will distribute enough poppies so that every Canadian can wear one.
