Civic election heats up

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We’re down to the last few days before we find out who will lead Metro Vancouver’s municipalities next and things have been heating up in Vancouver, with reports suggesting the race could be tight between Vision’s Gregor Robertson and the NPA’s Kirk LaPointe.

Patrick Smith with Simon Fraser University thinks all parties will be narrowing their messages. “I think it’ll try and get it down to two or three key ideas, and even a particular kind of, aspect of that that will be the essential feature for the next week,” he explains. “The so-called ballot question that’ll be on peoples’ minds when they go to the polls is different in Surrey than it is on the North Shore, and different than it may be in Vancouver, so there’ll be some customizing I think of the message.”

Smith doesn’t see the energy level going down, including in Vancouver, where we’ve already seen one party launch a lawsuit against another.

He’s also expecting that each of those parties may also focus on criticizing one another over where campaign donations have come from, now that a list has been released by both.
