Holiday lunch gathering becoming a popular alternative to the office evening party

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You can still get up on the office photocopier, but it’s a little more noticeable when the annual Christmas party is a more mellow lunch affair.

The Yuletide lunch is a popular option for companies on a tighter budget; it’s also popular for bosses concerned about impaired employees making it home safely.

Sharon Bonner with Bright Ideas Events says she’s seeing fewer evening gala parties. “I remember our Christmas season, we planned 17 to 25 Christmas parties in a three-week period. Now, we’re down to half a dozen.”

But she says the evening gala isn’t dead — it just might just be scaled back a little, or delayed.

“One thing that’s happening a lot… is companies are holding their Christmas/holiday party in January — even in to February — where the prices are less and the people are not so stressed out and overwhelmed with ‘Christmas fatigue.'”

“An event we’ve done year after year for 400 guests would then be cancelled… and each individual department within the large firm would do their own luncheon Christmas party. I’m seeing that a lot,” she adds.
