Fewer traffic jams, less pollution benefits of ride-share apps: economic group

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There has been a lot of controversy over ride-sharing apps, but in a new report, the Montreal Economic Institute (MEI) is touting the benefits.

The group believes companies like Uber can help cut down on traffic jams and pollution. It argues everyone could come out ahead if cities adopt these ride-sharing services.

“Ride-sharing applications have the potential to reduce congestion — traffic deadlocks — by a very wide margin,” says Vincent Geloso with the MEI.

“There will also be side benefits in the form of lower emissions of CO2, cab drivers will also win because they’ll be able to see more consumer per hour. They’ll also be spending less on fuel because there’ll also be fewer deadlocks in traffic,” he adds.

Geloso would also like to see taxi drivers partly compensated for the falling value of their permits if the use of ride-sharing applications becomes widespread.

He adds cities need to thoroughly take into account the benefits produced by these ride-sharing companies before rejecting the idea.
