British Columbians blase about Black Friday

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you believe some retailers, the savings are huge on Black Friday, the day after American Thanksgiving.

But it seems a lot of Canadians are not buying the hype.

“It’s not worth it,” said one woman in Vancouver, the day before Black Friday.

Canadians have seen the images: huge crowds surging into big box retailers, at times shoving and even trampling their fellow shoppers to get at the goods.

“It’s kind of insane there. I’ve seen the videos,” says young one man on Burrard Street.

“I don’t like to be in that kind of environment. People turning into animals and grabbing things,” says another woman.

Some of us, it turns out, are rather patriotic.

“I like to support our side of the economy,” says one shopper.

Others don’t believe the day represents true savings.

“The sales have been made public, but the discounts aren’t that deep,” says one Vancouverite.

“From studies that have been done, a lot of the prices have artificially been pushed up before the occasion, so that when they go on sale, they’re actually at a normal sale price,” said a man.

Others will be spending money while surfing the net.

“I will be at home shopping online,” a mother told News1130.
