If your car isn’t winter-ready, you could be hit with a hefty fine

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Is your car ready for the winter?

If you’re taking you car out on rural highways like the Coquihalla Highway, police will be checking out your wheels; under new provincial rules, you could be taken off the road if your tires aren’t in good enough shape.

“You should have winter tires or a tread that has a minimum of 3.5 millimetres,” says RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien.

Besides looking to see whether those tires are in good shape, O’Brien says officers will be checking cars for a few other things.

“Wiper blades — if they’re not working, they’re streaking and they’re limiting your visibility — that is a hazard. [We’ll check that] lights are working. And then we’ll have some engagement with them about what they should have in their vehicle, as far as emergency supplies.”

If something isn’t working and police think it’s a hazard, they could take you off the road. Otherwise, you could be hit with a hefty fine or get a warning to get your car winter-ready within 30 days.
