Operation Red Nose is gearing up for another busy year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Operation Red Nose is a chance to get you and your car home safe if you’ve had a few too many drinks at the pub or a holiday party.

Since 2010, BC’s tough impaired driving laws have ramped up demand for the volunteer service.

Dennis Sherwin with Chilliwack’s program says it helps keep the roads safe.

“Last year the RCMP credited Operation Red Nose with helping to reduce the fatalities. In fact I don’t think there were any fatalities here last year in the Chilliwack area over the Christmas season.”

He shared a story about a team picking up a man at a restaurant that shows the call is worth it. “As they were pulling up to the restaurant they phoned his cell and he said [to them] don’t bother, I got tired of waiting for you, right now I’m sitting in the back of a police car getting an impaired charge.”

Last year almost 4,400 volunteers provided almost 8,000 rides in 25 communities around the province.

Operation Red Nose will run weekends up until December 20th, plus New Years Eve from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
