Tent city coming down in Surrey

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – People living at a tent city off 135A Street in Surrey have been told to pack up and leave.

It’s hard to say where the tenters will go; the approximately 20 people are being offered shelter beds, but most of them are in Vancouver.

Jonquil Halljate with the Surrey Urban Mission Society says many of them have lived in Surrey for a long time and will not want to leave.

“If there were shelter beds available other places that they were willing to go, they would have gone a long time ago. They wouldn’t be living in a tent in November and December,” she tells us.

Mounties are there, but Halljate says the pack up has been peaceful and no one living there wants to cause a fuss.

She notes the Urban Mission will be able to house some of the tenters, thanks to cold weather emergency shelter funding, but that won’t last long.

A tent city in Surrey is being dismantled, out reach workers doubt all of the people living there will come in from the cold.
