More clean energy workers than oilsands: report

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) More people now work in clean energy than at the oilsands. That’s the finding of a report looking at how far the sector has come.

The report from Clean Energy Canada finds 23,700 people are working in clean energy, while 22,340 work in oilsands extraction.
Dan Woynillowicz with the group says it’s not about saying one type of job is better than the other.

“It’s purely to say from a sense of scale, we hear a lot about the oilsands and the jobs being created there, so we just found it was a useful way to provide Canadians with a sense of the size of the clean energy sector.”

The green energy sector has grown by 37 per cent between 2009 and 2013. Woynillowicz with the group says growth isn’t expected to slow any time soon. “Those jobs are spread out across the country. It’s not just in any one province or just a few provinces. We’re seeing that growth distributed from coast to coast to coast.”

He says this report should serve as a reason to give clean energy the same support that we give oilsands extraction.
