Police putting extra resources on the road to catch impaired drivers

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – RCMP across Canada will be trying their best to catch people driving drunk Friday night as the Christmas party season gets into full swing.

We all know drinking and driving is dangerous, but many of us still do it. Staff Sergeant Dale Summerville cautions new laws effectively have lowered the limit to .05.

He says many people don’t know know their limit. “It’s your typical mom and dad out there with kids at home with a babysitter and they only go out to have a drink two or three times a year and if you have had two or three drinks and you don’t normally do that on a regular basis, you have no tolerance for alcohol,” he explains.

Sommerville says you’ll see roadblocks, but there are also officers using more covert techniques. “Unmarked police cars, we set up road checks that are in out of the way areas where lots of drivers think they can avoid the police but of course there we are and that is where we catch them.”

Friday is National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.
