Garry Handlen, accused in cold-case homicides, appears in court

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – A man accused of murdering two girls in the 1970s was in court for his first appearance in Abbotsford this morning.

Garry Handlen, now 67, is accused of killing 11-year-old Kathryn-Mary Herbert and 12-year-old Monica Jack.

“He stood there silently,” says reporter Grant Sigaty, who was in the courtroom today. “He looked a little uncomfortable and didn’t really look out at the people in the courtroom at all. His lawyers made all the arrangements for his next court appearance. He didn’t say a word.”

“The courthouse was packed with family, friends and supporters of the families of the two victims. They were quite quiet. A couple of them looked quite emotional, but it was more just sombre. The courtroom went dead quiet when Handlen appeared.”

Handlen, who we only learned was charged last week, will appear in court again on March 2nd via video link.
