Surgeons at Burnaby Hospital want more funding from Fraser Health Authority

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Surgeons at Burnaby Hospital have written a letter to the Fraser Health Authority pointing out what they call excessive wait times for elective procedures.

The letter outlines what the surgeons claim are exponentially higher wait times at Burnaby Hospital in comparison with Surrey Memorial.

“Burnaby just doesn’t have what the surgeons consider equitable resources to do the work,” surgeon Dr. David Jones says.

Jones is one of the surgeons who signed the letter and wants funding for more beds, saying just six of the 10 operating rooms at the hospital are in use.

“We’ve heard that they’re going to start evening out the resources,” Jones says. “But the operating budget for Surrey Memorial is roughly $18-million annually. At Burnaby it’s $9-million.”

The surgeons are also upset over the Fraser Health Authority mandating checkups with patients at the 40 week mark if they are still waiting for an operation.
