Avalanche danger downgraded ahead of the weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Avalanche Canada forecaster Grant Helgeson says any time you add new stress to the snow pack, like all the wind, rain and snow we saw this week, there is a spike in natural avalanche activity.

“We should see the danger rating starting to drop a little bit now but folks definitely need to be real cautious as they head out this weekend because although things are getting a bit stronger out there it still has been real tricky early winter and it’s been a really tricky weekend as they start managing avalanche hazards in the mountains,” he explains. “It’s tricky because we have a number of crusts in the snow pack [and] we also just had a storm that did step down some of our deeply buried weak layer in the snow pack so it’s hard to trust anything yet.”

He adds even though we haven’t had any avalanche fatalities this winter, it is early and urges everyone to take the proper precautions as we add people to the backcountry and weight to the snowpack.
