CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – An early morning crash has claimed the life of an unidentified woman.

Inspector Davy Lee with the RCMP says it happened at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning. “A single vehicle was in a ditch on Highway 1 approximately 5 km east of Chilliwack in the eastbound lane. The female occupant was on the shoulder of the roadway, I guess looking for help and a passing crew member of the Department of Highways went down to the vehicle to check out to see if there was anybody else in it.

“For reasons unknown to us, the female driver walked on to the travelling portion of the highway where she was stuck, resulting in her fatality,” adds Lee.

There is no indication speed or alcohol was a factor.

The highway has been closed eastbound for several hours. It is expected to re-open around noon.
