Site C dam decision expected today

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A major announcement on the future of the Site C hydroelectric dam is expected Tuesday.
The province is set to make its decision public in Victoria sometime between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

John Winter with BC’s Chamber of Commerce is hoping it gets approved.

He says it would be one of the largest projects in BC’s history and will lead to more economic opportunities. “It will enable the province to expand its power output to a point where we can attract some significant investment projects to the province and it could be a significant partner to a sizable LNG industry as an example.

He says the pressure is on to find clean energy sources. “Certainly the energy is important and at this stage the energy from a cleaner source is certainly something that is more attractive to investors.”

Winter tells us this type of operation can produce a great amount of hydroelectricity and at the right price.

Although it’ll take a number of years to build the dam, he adds the benefits it will bring make it worth the wait and adds now’s the time to show the world how our province continues to be a major producer and supplier of power.

The $8.5-billion project would be the third on the Peace River.

First Nations and environmental groups have vowed to fight the project in court every step of the way.
