Changes coming to mental health and addictions recovery

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some big changes are coming to the Lower Mainland in the hopes of getting a better handle on mental health issues and addictions recovery.

Riverview Hospital will get 14 new beds and 26 others are coming to the Burnaby Centre for Mental Health.

The Burnaby Centre will also go through a major renovation to develop an intensive recovery program for people with mental health and addictions.

Darrell Burnham with Coast Mental Health says the hope is for lasting recovery.

“Many of these people have bounced from pillar-to-post, from hospital to jail, to the community, been homeless for a period of time. We’re really hoping that this will a very secure recovery for the individuals.”

This comes a year after a mental health crisis was declared by Vancouver’s mayor and police chief.

This is all part of a $20 million program announced by the Health Ministry last year. The official announcement is expected this afternoon.
