Tips to deal with holiday stress

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s no doubt the holidays can be a stressful time of year, from shopping and travelling, to the challenge of dealing with less-than-pleasant family dynamics.

If you’re feeling a little anxious as we get closer to the big day, Counsellor Greg Gurel with Rhodes Wellness College has some tips for coping with that stress.

He recommends having a clear idea of what you want to have happen over the holidays.

“Be clear that ‘this is what my intent is, this is what I want to have happen,’ and work towards making that happen. So, if you want some quiet time, make sure you’ve got some of that; if you want some family time, go for some of that,” says Gurel.

Next, keep expectations reasonable for yourself and others about what can be done.

“[There’s] nothing worse than thinking you have to have everything done perfectly for the one day and then it doesn’t happen and there’s you know, disappointment and I think I failed, so having reasonable expectations for what I think I can do in the time given.”

“Historically, things have happened in a family. Sometimes there have been great Christmases, sometimes bad ones — maybe if you’re on your own some Christmases — but whatever’s happened in the past doesn’t mean it has to happen again,” he adds.

And keep in mind: different choices can mean a different experience.

He points out it’s an emotional time of year, and people handle emotions in different ways; for some people it’s comfortable and for others they may become more cranky, assertive, or quiet.

“So, knowing your own style for working with your feelings and honouring it, it’s all good that way.”

Lastly, Gurel recommends “doing your part.”

“‘Show up the way I want to show up.’ You know, if I want to have a great time, then show up and have a great time. Lead the way on what I’d like to have happen and don’t expect others to do it… Show up the way I want. Make it happen.”

He thinks the emphasis on family and connection makes this one of the most stressful times of year.
