Hundreds attend memorial for teen boy killed in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS1130) – It’s been a somber day in Surrey.

There was music, memories, tears and tributes as people gathered at the Peace Portal Alliance Church to remember Dario Bartoli.

Youth Pastor Geoff Stewart says he has been giving support to the Bartoli family and spoke on behalf of Dario’s mother.

“The desire to have him remembered for his laugh, smile and just the person that he was. He was cherished. There was hundreds of young people here that remembered him. For them to get an opportunity to be in a place with other people, sit beside them and grieve openly and feel freedom to feel sad about it.”

He says many of Bartoli’s friends are having a difficult time making sense of the tragedy.

“Some of them are playing out events of ‘what if I was there?’ The what ifs, what ifs, what ifs. I’m encouraging them that they never failed their friend. They were loyal to him and he was loyal to them.”

Bartoli died in the hospital last weekend after an altercation with a group of other teens.

There have been no arrests made. Homicide investigators are still looking to speak with witnesses.
