Father arrested after toddler found abandoned in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Charges are being recommended against the father of a toddler that was apparently abandoned at a Surrey bus stop.

A pair of workers at a liquor store spotted the child at the bus stop at around 11 a.m. and took care of him for hours before police arrived.

Corrina with Berezan Liquor Store, located in the Sullivan Station area, says some customers witnessed a man smacking a boy and then get on a bus, leaving the three-year-old all alone.

That’s when she says her staff went out to bring him inside to safety. “(They) retrieved the little boy and brought him in the location, called the police and let them know this is what they heard and this is what’s going on, and then they have him here at this location and took care of him.”

She says her staff did their best to make him feel at ease. “He was here in the location, and tried to make him feel less apprehensive and more comfortable, and also some customers that had come in as well brought toys and things in to help him use once they heard what had happened.”

The child was eventually identified after his photograph was distributed to social media sites.

The boy has now been safely re-united with his mother. The child’s father has been arrested in association to the abandonment and assault of the toddler.

Surrey RCMP are now asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident to call 604-599-0502 or call Crime Stoppers.
