Should BC be concerned about fracking?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With New York State moving to ban fracking over health concerns, are those worries relevant to BC’s LNG plans?

New York State made the decision largely because much remains unknown about the health implications of the practice.

Werner Antweiler with UBC’s Sauder School of Business also says more research is needed. “If you want to develop the LNG industry here in the province they should look at basically finding out what is the best practice and make sure we adopt those practices,” he explains. “It can induce these micro quakes, micro earthquakes and if they are happening very close to urban areas of course that would be a major concern that it could cause actually damage.”

Antweiler says it’s premature to weigh in either way on the risks until a US Environmental Protection Agency report on the subject comes out early next year.
