Crowdfunding campaign to bring “StickBoy” to schools is a success

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It was a hit on the stage and now the opera “StickBoy” is very close to making its rounds in BC schools.

Amanda Burrows with the Vancouver Opera says their crowdfunding campaign to raise the funds needed to adapt the production, which focuses on the issue of bullying, ends Wednesday.

She notes the production at the Vancouver Playhouse in the fall was well received, and the fundraiser to get the tour going by 2016 is no different.

“You don’t necessarily go to the opera, but because the topic of bullying resonates so much, people really adhered to this campaign and want to support it anyway they can to make sure it goes to schools,” she explains. “The tone of the piece is kind of dark and it doesn’t have a happy ending but what we want as the goal with StickBoy is to foster discussion around bullying, and we’re not trying to solve it with the opera but we are trying to facilitate discussion.”

She says all of the money will go to support things like costumes, props, an LED screen and a keyboard complete with a synthesizer adding they are hoping to collect a couple of thousand dollars more.

The initial goal of $10,000 was increased to $15,000 after they reached their first goal in just three weeks.
