More Canadians did their holiday shopping on this side of the border

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It was a very good holiday season for local retailers.

Michael LeBlanc with the Retail Council of Canada says the falling loonie didn’t make the trip across the border as enticing for many shoppers. “If you saved a couple of dollars on the gas in the tank to get you into the US, you certainly didn’t see the same kind of savings that would when the dollar was at par.”

He explains low gas prices are getting some of the credit, “that is putting more disposable income on the table, a little less money in the tank [and] a few more presents under the tree.”

LeBlanc adds this year, more people did their shopping online and small business should take notice.
