Make your New Year’s resolutions realistic: psychologist

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Tonight, we’ll be saying goodbye to 2014 and hello to 2015.

With the new year comes the usual challenge: Do you make a resolution?

Psychologist Dr. Lawrence Miller says one of the keys to a good goal is to make it realistic.

“If someone comes in and they say, ‘I need to lose 40 pounds by the time of my wedding next month,’ that’s not a realistic goal. It’s certainly not a healthy goal,” he says.

He adds to succeed, you need to think like an Olympic athlete. “They will picture or visualize themselves going through their routines and winning their competitions before they even participate in them. So, when they actually do participate in them, they’ve already won.”

Miller isn’t a huge fan of waiting until January 1st to try to improve your life. He says you don’t need a special date to begin to get fit, stop procrastinating, or whatever your resolution may be.

“The moment that you slip up or fail a little bit, there’s that tendency to think ‘Well, I guess I’ll have to try again next January 1st.’ Of course, it is faulty logic to think that way because you can set goals and make resolutions anytime,” he explains.
