LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – Looking for a way to shake out the cobwebs this New Year’s Day? How does taking a leap into some frigid water sound?

There are plenty of polar bear swims taking place around the Lower Mainland.

English Bay is the spot to be in Vancouver, if you want a very mild case of hypothermia. Be sure to get there by noon; the swim starts at 2:30 p.m. Last year’s plunge attracted over 2,000 swimmers.

Not in the area? Never fear! You can still drop your internal body temperature a few notches.

Similar plunges take place at Panorama Park in Deep Cove, Semiahmoo Bay in White Rock, and Burrard Inlet in Port Moody.

And even though it will be sunny, temps are expected to be a brisk five degrees.

Other countries taking part today include the US, United Kingdom and the Netherlands, where you’ll find the largest in the world.

The largest one in North America takes place in Long Beach.
