Winter weather can be tough on your pets: SPCA

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Now that the South Coast is finally being hit with some winter weather, it is raising concerns about your four-legged friends.

Even though they have their own fur coats, so to speak, Lori Chortyk with the SPCA says the onus is on the owner to help them out.

She says smaller animals are at the highest risk because they feel the chilly weather more than their larger counterparts.

“We really advise that people keep their animals indoors unless you are taking them out for exercise, but if you do have to keep a pet outside, we absolutely recommend that they have access to a shelter that is off the ground, that is away from the wind and is properly insulated.”

She notes walking your pets in areas where icing materials have been put down could also be problematic. “It’s a good idea to just to wipe off their paws and clean them off because we do see animals with skin irritations and other injuries from the salt.”

Chortyk adds a lot of animals are killed every year because they hide under a car to get away from the cold, but then are run over when the driver pulls out.

She suggests making some noise or thumping the roof before getting in.
