Are stratas clear on how composting rules will be implemented in their buildings?

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you live in a condo, you may have heard about new regulations that just went into effect, requiring you to compost your food scraps.

Does your strata have it all figured out?

The executive director of the Condominium Home Owners Association isn’t confident the rollout of these rules will be a fast and smooth process for all stratas.

Tony Gioventu doesn’t think many really know what they’re doing quite yet. He doesn’t believe stratas will be very proactive in getting their systems in place until fines and penalties come into the picture.

He says several buildings have already had to update their waste management facilities.

“If they had waste management facilities that provided only access for waste disposal — not for recycling — they’ve had to modify their building to accommodate how recycling gets in and out of buildings,” he explains.

“This will just be another layer on top of that,” he adds.

Gioventu says it will be interesting to see how stratas adopt new rules to accommodate the food scraps program.

Enforcement will be phased in over the next couple of years.
