Do you pay every time you take a bus or SkyTrain?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – One of the most common ways people try to avoid paying for the bus or SkyTrain is to only buy a one zone fare when they know they will be going much further says Chief of Transit Police Neil Dubord, adding that move will still get you a $173 ticket.

“2014 numbers aren’t quite in yet but in 2013 I can tell you that we wrote over 25,000 fare infraction notices over the course of the year,” he says.

Dubord explains ticket checking is used to enhance the safety, security and comfort of passengers. “You know, if you could probably look at it, it would be anywhere between 25 to sort of 33 per cent. So, one third of the time. It just depends how busy we are for calls for service on that particular day as well.”

He adds fare checking is only a small part of the job, which includes reducing sexual offences, operator assaults and managing mental health issues on transit.
