Vancouver Board of Trade on the ‘Yes’ side of the transportation referendum

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Ahead of the spring’s transportation funding referendum, the Vancouver Board of Trade has firmly landed on the “Yes” side.

Its president and CEO says he’s underwhelmed by the “No TransLink Tax” campaign.

Iain Black says he’s all for more efficient spending, but “to suggest that municipalities are going to commit future growth revenues is an over-simplified approach that really is going to divert funds from decisions around incremental police, fire, parks and other types of decisions that the mayors need to make in the future.”

The Board of Trade is part of the “Better Transit and Transportation Coalition,” which includes the BC Chamber of Commerce, Unifor, and the David Suzuki Foundation

“When you see the David Suzuki Foundation linking arms with the Vancouver Board of Trade and the business community and linking arms with the largest private-sector union in the country, that should communicate right away to our population that… this is a bigger conversation,” says Black.

“When you have groups that are normally at odds with each other, and yet they are very much together on this issue, that should speak volumes as to the importance of the decision itself.”

He says the coalition is hoping for a formal “Yes” campaign launch at the end of the month.
