Greece to rule on extradition of Algerian wanted in Belgium on suspicion of jihadi terrorism

ATHENS, Greece – An Algerian man wanted in Belgium on terrorism-related charges is due to appear before a Greek prosecutor.

It’s expected that the prosecutor will refer the 33-year-old to a council of judges that will rule on a Belgian extradition request — a process expected to take several days.

Police say the suspect, whose name was not released, was formally arrested on a European arrest warrant Sunday, a day after his detention in Athens, where he was living.

Belgium launched a large anti-terrorism sweep last week, during which two suspects were killed and one wounded, that netted several returnees from Islamic holy war in Syria. A Belgian federal magistrate said the suspects were within hours of trying to kill police.
