Fancy alarm systems may not protect your home: study

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Buying a high-priced home alarm system may not protect your home in the way you had hoped.

That’s the finding of a team of British Researchers, including Graham Farrell who works at Simon Fraser University.

“We don’t necessary have an explanation for it other than perhaps the burglars just ignore them and around 99 percent of alarms that go off are false alarms.” Farrell explains.

He notes locks and security lighting seem to do more to deter robbers than expensive home alarms. “You can now get good quality security that is built into doors and windows and isn’t unsightly. Where security is a default rather than an add-on option.”

The study didn’t look at why alarms didn’t perform as expected.
