Port Metro Vancouver truckers protesting stripping of licences

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Truckers stripped of their licences to serve Port Metro Vancouver showed up at the port’s downtown offices this morning to protest the move.

The big question the affected truckers are asking is — why our licences?

Tom Johnson with the Canadian Transportation Alliance says those who lost their licences were not given any reasons.

“If they wanted to reduce the number of tags, what they should have done is come up with a percentage and capped each company fairly,” Johnson says. “At least the owner-operators would have a couple of months to either find another job or get into another field.”

Truckers were brought in for meetings with the port’s leadership four at a time, but Johnson says he wasn’t give any new information.

“There’s going to be protests, rallies, lawsuits,” Johnson says. “I do challenge Port Metro Vancouver to list it on their website, what method they used to come up with these companies [to have their licences stripped], either a pros and cons list, name out of a hat, whatever method they used, and have a scoreboard. They should have at least given the companies that have been serving the ports for over 30 years an opportunity to upgrade their equipment — whatever the failing factor was — they should have at least allowed the companies the opportunity to so, and they have not.”

He says companies will bring this to court if necessary.
