Upgrade work means some traffic slowdowns on Highway 99, Lions Gate Bridge

By

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – Expect some traffic delays for the next little while on a couple of busy routes.

Drivers heading in and out of Richmond will need to slow down at the Bridgeport Road offramps from Highway 99 due to upgrade work in the area from now until the end of next month.

You will also see fewer lanes on the Lions Gate Bridge in the evenings and overnights from Sunday to Thursday. The aging bridge joints are being replaced. That work is expected to continue for another three weeks.

SFU Transportation Expert Gordon Price says the headaches will probably be worth it in the end.

“Whether it’s transit or roads, you pretty much face the same dilemma: How do you get that necessary maintenance in there so that you don’t get the worst situation of all — that you defer the maintenance and you end up with a real catastrophe.”

He believes if at least ten per cent of drivers make small changes to the time they hit the road, we can all avoid long line-ups.
