New video highlights the need for increased funding for child welfare system in BC

Choose Children launches new video to highlight crisis in BC's child welfare system.

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – In the video you see children with yellow tags across their foreheads with social service file numbers written on them. Halfway through the video the kids rip them off.

Stephanie Smith with the BCGEU, which is behind the grass roots group Choose Children, explains the significance of the video. “These are vulnerable children, they’re not case files, they’re not numbers. They’re people’s children, and so it’s really trying to highlight the human element of this complete issue.”

She’s hoping it will encourage the province to restore the $44 million cut from the ministry of children and family development since 2008 to end what she calls a crisis in the system. “We need adequate staffing levels to reach vulnerable children. Right now less than 1 in 5 front-line social workers have a case load consistent with best practices. These are children who go into our child welfare system. This is supporting families in crisis so that child apprehensions are actually not happening but families are being supported in moments of crisis.”

She’s encouraging people to watch the video and send a letter or e-mail to the Premier demanding for change.
