Port defends changes to truck licensing

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Port Metro Vancouver is defending the criteria used to decide which trucking companies and drivers can keep their licenses and which can’t.

Truckers know some licenses had to be cut to ensure fairness at the Port but they are slamming the criteria used to decide who gets one, saying the process has been unfair.

It’s based on the company they work for, not a driver’s record or experience.

“Our relationship is principally with the trucking companies and we tried to develop a system in consultation that was as fair as possible but it’s very difficult to manage all of the issues that were at play in what is a very complex situation,” explains Peter Xotta with the Port. “Does this company have a record of compliance or are they a problematic company. That resulted in a positive or negative attribution for that particular criteria.”

Some drivers have spent more than 20 years building their livelihood around the industry. The union and United Truckers Association both feel the licensing process could have taken into consideration a driver’s experience.

Yesterday truckers held a rolling strike along Highway 91 and through Vancouver and another rally of some sort if happening tomorrow.
