Blizzard buries Kitimat under five feet of snow

KITIMAT (NEWS1130) – People living in Kitimat are continuing to dig out from a massive dumping of snow.

Roughly 800 people live in Kitimaat Village, where over five feet of snow has fallen and power has been out for days.

Ron Poole, Chief Administrative Officer for the District of Kitimat says road access connecting the town and village has also been impacted.

“Access has been very limited, basically by snowmobile only. As of last night, they were able to open the road but it was pretty much restricted to only four-wheel drive vehicles.”

He says BC Hydro provided a vehicle to help people leave the village.

Poole says the town of Kitimat suffered a power outage affecting half of its population, but it has since been restored. “BC Hydro says about 5,000 customers in Kitimat were out of power and we have a population of approximately 10,000 people.”

He says many people have been staying at the rec centre in town, which has a backup generator; others have found family or friends to stay with.
